When heat dissipation, noise and airflow are especially important, the SC120-W5B design allows for 23-30% greater airflow, heat removal and substantially less objectionable noise than even the optimum sheet metal guard. Wire form fan guards are only made to fit fans with the same dimensions. Advantages to using fan guards include less energy consumption by the fan, and a longer lifespan for the fan. The right fan guard also helps with airflow by preventing dirt build-up. Cooling fans should always be used with a fan guard.
