The liquid filling lessens the effects of vibration and lubricates the movement.

To re-calibrate: To reset a gauge that does not default back to 0, start to lift out the rubber stopper on the back. This will release the internal pressure and set the gauge back to 0. Once it reaches 0, push the stopper back in.
