How These Options Differ

Start with the panel hole: all of these drop into a 16mm (5/8") cutout, so the real decision is lens shape, color, and whether you need light. Round lenses (K16-211 series) come in red, green, blue, yellow, and white; the go-to for standard start/stop/function buttons where you just need a colored actuator. The square (K16-221) and rectangle (K16-231) lenses give a larger, easier-to-hit target and a cleaner look under a legend plate; pick square (18 x 18mm) for a compact grid, rectangle (24mm wide) when you want a wider label surface. If the button must glow (status indication or dark-cabinet visibility) go to the illuminated version and match the LED to your control voltage: 6VDC, 12VDC, or 24VDC. Getting LED voltage wrong is a common mistake; a 6V LED on 24V power burns out instantly. All share the same contact rating at 1A at 24VDC/120VAC, so it rarely drives the choice, but if you're switching an inductive load or anything above logic level, de-rate accordingly and consider an interposing relay.

How a momentary push button works

A momentary button makes or breaks its contact only while your finger holds it down; release it and a spring returns it to rest. That's the opposite of a maintained button, which latches in position. These Kacon K16 units use snap-action SPDT (single-pole, double throw) or DPDT (double-pole, double throw) contacts.

  • Rated load: 1A at 24VDC/120VAC, 0.5A at 250VAC
  • Contact material: 24K gold-plated alloy, ideal for low-current logic signals down to 1mA/5VDC
  • Mechanical life: min. 1,000,000 operations; electrical life min. 100,000 at rated load

Use momentary buttons for start, stop, jog, reset, and function inputs to a PLC or relay. Because the contacts are gold-plated, they reliably switch the tiny currents a 24V PLC input draws without the oxidation problems of bare silver contacts. If you need to switch a larger load, drive an interposing relay instead of the load directly.

Square push button vs round: choosing the lens shape

Lens shape is cosmetic and ergonomic, not electrical. All three share the 16mm hole and the same contact ratings.

  • Round: 18mm diameter lens. Offered in red, green, blue, yellow, and white for standard color-coded functions.
  • Square: 18 x 18mm flat face. Buttons pack tightly into an even grid and read cleanly under a legend plate. Offered in the same five colors.
  • Rectangle: 24mm wide x 18mm high for the biggest target and the most label area, good for gloved operators or a prominent function. Offered in the same colors as the other two versions.

All are 30mm long behind the panel, so verify you have that depth clearance in the enclosure. For a uniform look across a row of buttons, don't mix shapes, pick one family and use color to distinguish functions.

AC illuminated push button vs low-voltage DC LED

The illuminated models in the K16 series are lit by a DC LED, not an AC lamp. Each LED runs about 15mA at its rated voltage and is rated roughly 50,000 hours.

  • 6VDC LED: for 6V logic or low-voltage supplies
  • 12VDC LED: for 12V systems
  • 24VDC LED: for the common 24VDC control rail

There is no AC version in this series. If you specifically need an AC illuminated push button, or select an AC-rated illuminated device or a standalone pilot light instead. The Kacon T16 series offers 16mm illuminated push buttons with 110/220V AC voltages. Feeding 110V or 220V AC directly to a DC LED button destroys the lamp instantly, and observe LED polarity when wiring. The contact block is still rated to switch up to 250VAC, only the illumination is voltage-specific. Keep the LED leads on their own terminals, separate from the switched load.

Wiring and installing the K16 in a panel

Installation is a drop-in for standard 16mm cutouts.

  • Drill or punch a clean 16mm (5/8") hole; deburr it so the IP65 gasket seats flat.
  • Insert the button from the front, add the mounting collar from behind, and tighten to hold the IP65 seal.
  • Wire the terminals.
  • Solder terminals at 20W for 5 seconds max (260°C for 3 seconds) to avoid heat-damaging the contact block.
  • On illuminated versions, connect the LED leads to your matching DC supply, observing polarity.

Allow 30mm of depth behind the panel. IP65 protects the front face against dust and low-pressure water jets, it does not seal the back of the switch. Keep the terminals inside a sealed enclosure and never rely on the button alone for washdown protection at the rear.

Common Mistakes (and the Fix)

✗ Ordering an LED button without matching the control voltage
✓ Match the suffix to your DC rail: -6V, -12V, or -24V. A mismatch burns out the LED.
✗ Looking for an AC illuminated button from this series
✓ The K16 series LEDs are DC only; drive them from a 6/12/24V supply or choose an AC-rated device from the T16 series.
✗ Switching an inductive or oversized load directly
✓ Stay within 1A/24VDC-120VAC or drive an interposing relay; add arc suppression.
✗ Cutting an oversized or ragged panel hole
✓ Use a clean 16mm (5/8") cutout and deburr so the IP65 gasket seals.
✗ Overheating terminals during soldering
✓ Limit to 20W for 5 seconds (or 260°C for 3 seconds) to protect the contacts.
✗ Treating momentary buttons as on/off switches
✓ Momentary contacts only hold while pressed; use a maintained switch or latch logic for on/off.
✗ Mixing lens shapes across one button row
✓ Pick one shape family and use color to distinguish functions for a clean panel.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is Kacon and are these buttons UL listed?

Kacon is a Korean manufacturer of industrial pushbuttons, pilot lights, buzzers, and limit switches. Every K16 button is UL & CUL Recognized and CE marked, with 24K gold-plated contacts rated 1A at 24VDC/120VAC and 0.5A at 250VAC.

Do you have an AC illuminated push button?

Not in this series. The illuminated K16 models use DC LEDs in 6V, 12V, or 24V, not AC. For a lit button on a 110V or 220V circuit, select a separate AC-rated illuminated device from the T16 series. Applying 220VAC directly to a DC LED button destroys the lamp instantly.

What size hole do these push buttons need?

All fit a 16mm (5/8") mounting hole. Round lenses are 18mm diameter, square are 18 x 18mm, and the rectangle is 24mm wide, but the panel cutout is the same 16mm for every model. Allow 30mm of depth behind the panel.

What's the difference between round, square, and rectangle push buttons?

The round lens (18mm dia.) is the standard actuator. The square lens (18 x 18mm) is a flat face for uniform grids. The rectangle (24mm wide x 18mm high) gives the largest target and label area. All mount in the same 16mm hole and use the same contact block. The difference is purely cosmetic and ergonomic.

Are these momentary or maintained buttons?

All are momentary: the contact is active only while pressed and springs back when released. Use them for start, jog, function, or reset actions, not for latched on/off states. For a latched function, use a maintained switch or hold the state in your PLC/relay logic.

Which LED voltage should I pick for an illuminated button?

Match the LED to your control supply: -6V for 6VDC, -12V for 12VDC, -24V for 24VDC. Each LED draws about 15mA nominal and is rated ~50,000 hours. Observe polarity and never put a 6V or 12V LED on a 24V rail; it will fail. Wire the LED leads separately from the switched load terminals.

Can these contacts switch a motor, contactor coil, or other inductive load?

The contacts are rated 1A at 24VDC/120VAC (0.5A at 250VAC), and the gold plating is optimized for low-current logic signals down to 1mA/5VDC. For inductive loads (relay/contactor coils, small motors) stay well within the rating, add arc suppression, or switch a small logic signal to an interposing relay sized for the load. Electrical life is rated at a minimum of 100,000 operations at rated resistive load; inductive loads reduce that.

Do you also carry Kacon limit switches and buzzers?

Yes! Kacon's line includes limit switches and buzzers as well as pushbuttons. Check our Kacon brand page for related parts, including the HR705 series relays, if you're building out a full panel.
