🔧 What Are M12 Hardwired Connectors?

Mencom M12 hardwired connectors (MDC or MEC series) are field-wireable plugs that arrive WITHOUT pre-attached cables. You wire them on-site using screw terminals. Ideal when:

📏 Step 1: Match Cable Diameter to PG Size (Critical!)

Use calipers or a wire gauge to measure your cable's outer diameter, then select the correct PG (Panzer-Gewinde) strain relief size:

🚫 Common Mistake: Ordering PG 9 for a 3.5mm cable creates a loose fit that compromises IP67 protection. Always verify cable diameter falls WITHIN the specified range.

🔌 Step 2: Choose Pin Count & Configuration

Pin count must match your cable's conductor count. Here's what each configuration typically handles:

4-Pole Connectors

  • Basic NPN/PNP sensors

5-Pole Connectors

  • Most common choice

🔄 Male vs. Female Selection

Choose MALE when:

⚙️ Step 3: Field Wiring Installation

🛠️ Tools Needed: Wire strippers, small flathead screwdriver (2.5mm), cable gauge/calipers

  1. Disassemble connector: Unscrew coupling nut and remove PG cable gland
  2. Strip wires: Remove 1" from cable jacket and 0.2" of insulation from each conductor (no more to prevent shorts)
  3. Thread cable: Pass your cable through the PG gland → coupling nut → connector body (in that order)
  4. Insert into terminals: Push firmly until wire bottoms out
  5. Tighten screws: Use 0.3 Nm torque. Over-torquing damages terminals
  6. Secure strain relief: Reassemble shell & tighten PG gland to 2.5 Nm torque to maintain IP67 seal
  7. Test continuity: Use multimeter before connecting to equipment (catches 90% of wiring errors)

✅ Installation Success Indicator: After tightening PG gland, you should NOT be able to twist or pull the cable out with moderate hand force.

Problem: Water Ingress / Failed IP67 Rating

Critical Checks:

  • Cable diameter TOO SMALL for PG size → Replace with correct PG gland
  • PG washer damaged/missing → Order replacement PG gland assembly
  • Cable jacket cut during installation → Replace cable (compromised seal)
  • Connector not fully seated in receptacle → Verify coupling nut is tightened
