What does an alternating relay do?

An alternating relay changes which of two loads operates first on successive cycles. In a duplex pump system, this shares duty between the pumps instead of repeatedly starting the same unit. A float or pressure switch typically initiates the cycle; the selected relay configuration determines how the loads respond.

An optional slider switch provides load-lock selection in a compact format.

Choose the Output for Your Control Sequence

SPDT

Use for a basic alternating sequence where one load operates at a time. Match the relay wiring to the control switch and load contactors.

DPDT

Choose when the alternating circuit needs an additional contact set, such as for pilot-light indication.

DPDT Cross-Wired

Review for lead/lag operation that brings on the second load when demand increases. Confirm the required switch sequence and wiring diagram.

Before You Replace an Alternating Relay

  • Match control voltage: Check both the voltage and AC/DC designation.
  • Confirm the circuit: Match the contact arrangement, pin assignments and operating sequence.
  • Check the actual load rating: Compare the applicable contact and motor ratings, not just the 10A headline value.
  • Allow installation space: Include the socket, wiring clearance and selector access when checking panel fit.
