How to choose the right LED fixture

1️⃣ Start with lumens

Match the existing light output or the target illumination level. Watts measure energy use; lumens measure brightness.

2️⃣ Select color temperature

Use the color temperature in Kelvin (K) for appearance and CRI for color rendering. Warmer light is lower temperature; cooler, daylight-type light is higher temperature. CRI refers to how closely the light will show objects in their true color.

3️⃣ Check the environment

Verify voltage, ambient-temperature range, wet/damp rating, and IP protection. Hazardous locations require specifically listed fixtures.

4️⃣ Confirm controls

Check compatibility with occupancy sensors and dimmers. Confirm the required dimming method, commonly 0-10V

(Old watts − LED watts) × daily hours × 365 ÷ 1,000

Example:

If an output-verified 80 W LED replaces a 175 W fixture running 12 hours daily, it saves about 416 kWh per year. If your rate is $0.15/kWh, that is approximately $62 per year before maintenance savings.
