Hirschmann E-Series M12 hardwired connectors, sometimes referred to as field wireable or field attachable connectors, are made for the sensors and actuators found in automation. This can include such applications as proximity switches, flow monitoring devices, pressure switches, limit switches, or field bus components. They are designed to withstand locations with high vibration, such as on conveyor belts or punch presses, due to the secure coupling nut. The fail-safety for these connectors is excellent, even when reversed-bending stresses are present, such as in drag chains.

Classified by their size M12 locking thread, these circular connectors have 4 or 5 contacts with a PG 7 or PG 9 cable entry. They are available in both male or female, straight or right-angle configurations. The PG 7 sizes accommodate 4 to 6 mm cable, while the PG 9 cable entries can fit 6 to 8 mm cable. Most of the M12 cable plugs and sockets have a zinc aluminum/nickel alloy coupling nut, while a few have a polyamide coupling nut. All of them feature a polyamide housing with copper zinc alloy contacts. The E-Series M12 connectors are all rated for 250V and 4 Amps, with a wide operating temperature range of -13 F to 194 F. They all have A-Coded inserts, featuring a single keyway. Hirschmann's M12 field wireable connectors have a dust / moisture level rating of IP 67, indicating total protection from dust and temporary immersion in water (up to 1 meter for up to 30 minutes when fully mated). The housings can withstand exposure to various oils and chemicals. Strain relief is typically achieved through a clamping cage.

Hirschmann is one of several brands offered through the Belden name, which includes other types of connectors such as DIN 43650 solenoid valve connectors and control & supply industrial connectors, as well as Ethernet switches.
